Welcome to Building Services & Business Licensing

The Building Services & Business Licensing Division (BSL) is responsible for regulating a wide variety of developments that may start with a project concept and come to fruition with an occupied, safe, and properly licensed structure.

The Division consists of four sections: Permits, Inspections, Business Licensing and Ground Transportation Administration .

The Permits section issues over 8,500 permits annually for building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical work throughout the city.

The Inspection section consists of technical building inspectors, a Senior Building Inspector, and an Inspections Program Administrator who are responsible for inspecting buildings from plans and final construction.

The Business Licensing section has the responsibility to regulate the renewal of approximately 12,121 licenses in the city annually. They are also responsible for the processing and issuance of over 2,500 new business licenses annually.

The Ground Transportation section certifies ground transportation vehicle drivers who may operate in Salt Lake City as qualified and trained by means of fingerprinting, background check checks, ID badges, and enforcement, in order to provide professional and safe transportation services.
